History

VOID

In 1997, VOID was established by three practising artists. Jennifer Mehra, Yoko Yamashita and Rebecca Maynard found London to be lacking in approachable, affordable and professionally run venues that provide emerging artists with opportunities to stage independent exhibitions and events.

In response to this Yoko, Jennifer and Rebecca set out to locate a suitable space to hold a temporary exhibition of their work.

Originally intending to hold a 'one-off' show Yoko, Jennifer and Rebecca realised the potential of the temporary gallery and decided to approach and invite other artists to became involved and hold further exhibitions. The original VOID was located on Brick Lane, London El. The space was previously a leather workshop and consisted of two rooms.

In 1998, Rebecca moved overseas and Jennifer and Yoko continued to manage VOID. In May 1999, the last event was held at the Brick Lane venue. During June, VOID was relocated to 511 Hackney Road, a much improved space featuring a glass shop front, an internal exhibiting space of approximately 10m X 4m [3m height] and a large courtyard.Tim Maslen joined VOID in 1999.

From 1997 until 2000, VOID exhibited painting, sculpture, photography, drawing, installation, sound, video, performance and digital work by artists emanating from Europe, Asia, the Asia-Pacific region and the UK.
