Summer Of Discontent
36cm x 36cm x 5cm
sculpture: wire, paper-mache, and collaged archival photo
As the economic divide widens between the haves and have not's and the cost of living escalates beyond peoples earnings, the culture of celebrity, luxury and the desire for a fast track to both these things intensifies. Even in countries where one might not expect it, people revolt. Just as many pieces of ceramics in collections around the world offer narratives about their cultures, the transformed museum objects by Maslen & Mehra offer some disturbing thoughts about the legacy of current generations. One such snapshot is depicted in the piece Summer Of Discontent. A pastoral scene is inhabited by a policeman and a youth in the midst of an altercation referencing the 2011 riots in England. A gloomy tower block (photographed from the artists home at the time of production) looms behind them.
